Last week was a memorable one for the Wallwork family.

It was when leading sports figure, Tuaopepe Jerry Wallwork, was bestowed two chiefly titles from his father’s family at Satupa’itea and Lano, Savai’i.

On Tuesday, Tuaopepe was bestowed the Asiata title at Satupaitea. He was among 16 other family members who were also bestowed the Asiata title.

On Saturday, Tuaopepe was blessed as the new holder of the Vui title at Lano.

He was among 20 other family members who were honoured for their services to their family.

Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Tuaopepe said he is humbled by the recognition.

“This is my father Seiuli Paul Wallwork’s side at Lano and Satupaitea and to be chosen by his family to be a holder of both titles is an honour and a privilege,” he said.

“The most important part of this is that I am here to serve, and it comes with a lot of responsibilities.”

Tuaopepe said having a matai title doesn’t mean people can roam around and be like kings.

“The most important part of it is to serve,” he said.

“It means I have to serve my family and village to the best of my ability. That means I will have to carry the load off my family to help them with everything and be a great leader within the village.

“[And] with all of this, I depend on God to give me the strength and the wisdom to lead my family to be the best that I can and especially with love.”
