On the first day of the “International Week of People with Disabilities”, Nuanua o le Alofa (N.O.L.A.) hosted a council training at the TATTE Building in Apia.

N.O.L.A. had selected 20 participants from Upolu and Savai’i.

Working with the Samoa Family Health Association, one of the topics covered was sexual reproductive health. As a result, the Samoa Family Health Association is opening its free clinic for people with disabilities in Upolu and Savai’i to be checked.

Counseling was also on the agenda.  N.O.L.A. office manager, Faatino Utumapu told the Samoa Observer the training is extremely important.

“Some of them are blind, some of them have to use a wheelchair or crutches,” she said about the participants. “We have invited the disability sector to give us the representatives to attend this course.”  There were two members from the Loto Taumafai Society for People with Disabilities and one from the Senese Secondary Inclusive Education.

“When we started the program, we were doing it for just a basic certificate. But after the recommendation of the training to these organizations, we structured the last two meetings in order for the members to understand the course fully. Only because it came from the charity of the members, we decided to continue.”

During the course, the participants also get the opportunity to present their own assignments.

The training is funded by the Department of the Foreign Affairs and Trade (D.F.A.T.) of the government of Australia under the Samoa Disability Program.

The training is among a series of activities to commemorate the International Week of People with Disabilities.
