Distance makes the heart grow fonder

Perusing the array of dishes on offer at the W.I.B.D.I. organic night markets was Jamie Munce, whose hardest decision that day was whether to go with the pulled pork or smoked fish dish.

While waiting for her husband to join her at the markets, Juamie Munce spoke to Dear Tourist about how she was here to see her husband, Cameron, who had been doing some contract work here in Samoa at the wharf.

Normally Cameron alternates between working in Samoa and being with his family in Australia.

However this time, wife Jamie decided it was her turn to come to Samoa for a holiday and spend some quality time with Cameron.

“My husband has been working here since April and it is really hard that he’s away for work. Usually he comes home for a week once a month but this time we thought I would come here instead so yeah it’s my first time here so its been really good.”

Cameron eventually joins us and says that he does enjoy working in Samoa, but what he doesn’t like is that he hasn’t got to see much of it since he’s been here, so having his wife visit this time has meant that he has gotten to see more of Samoa in a couple days than he has seen in the six months he’s been here.

“We have done heaps of stuff.”

“The other day we went to Lalomanu beach and we saw the Trench and went swimming. Since I’ve been here we have done all the things that he (Cameron) has been wanting to do since he got here like visit all the beaches and swimming. Everyone has been so helpful over here, even though I don’t speak Samoan they are still wanting to go out of their way to understand and help me.”

The couple are making the most of their time together and indulging in their passion for food.

“We heard about the market and we thought we would come down and have a look, I love food especially my island food so I try to eat traditional local food or what ever is on offer.”

“I don’t want to order food that I can get back home so coming here to check out the food market is good because then we get to try it all in one place.”

Jamie is sad to return to Australia without her husband next week but they have two children who are waiting for their mum to come back and Jamie hopes to bring them next time with her in the near future while Cameron finishes out his contract here in Samoa.

“I’ve only ever been to New Zealand so actually Samoa is the first Pacific Island I’ve seen beyond that but it’s beautiful. I’ve always known that it would be beautiful because its part of the Pacific and yeah I would definitely come back.”
