The Ministry of Police is cracking down on drunk drivers.

And they are starting with their very own.

Earlier this week, a Police Officer was arrested and charged for driving under the influence of alcohol.

This was confirmed in a statement issued by the Samoa Police Service.

Police Media Spokesperson, Superintendent Logoitino Filipo, told the Weekend Observer that no one is above the law.

“The S.P.S. has a zero tolerance policy on this kind of behaviour by its officers."

“We continue to remain committed to gain the trust of the general public who they serve.”

According to the statement, the Police responded to a car crash on Wednesday at around 10.30pm on the west coast road, heading towards the airport.

It is alleged that the initial investigation revealed the vehicle was driven by a police officer who was off duty.

“The officer was taken into the police station for further investigations,” the statement said.

“He was proceeded through breathalyzer procedures and was found to be over the allowable limit to safely operate a motor vehicle on the road."

“He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol."

“The officer is now remanded at liberty until the 10th of October 2017 to await his court appearance for mention as well as being suspended from official duty.”

SEARCH WARRANTS

The Police also executed two search warrants.

As a result two arrests were made in connection with drugs and firearms allegations.

Last week, a 45-year-old male was arrested and charged following the execution of a search warrant for possession of narcotics.

“He was remanded in custody until the 2nd of October 2017 to appear before the court for mention,” says the Press Statement.

During the search, the Police confiscated into evidence, a plastic bag of suspected methamphetamine (ice); three smoking pipes (utensil).

The Police investigation into the matter continues.

Another arrest was made this week.

A male has been charged with charges of possession of an unlawful weapon.

At the search the Police seized an unlawful weapon with ammunitions; a large amount of cash in local and foreign currencies.

“The suspect has been remanded in custody to await his court appearance on the 10th of October 2017 for mention.” There is a possibility that additional charges may be filed as police investigations are continuing.

The Ministry of Police also acknowledged the public for their support in the fight against illicit drugs.
