Ready for Kickoff: The Papauta girls playing in the All Girls Open Tournament.

The girls will have the opportunity of a lifetime to showcase their talent on the national stage.

Next Saturday, the U18’s College girls’ game will kick off the historical day for Rugby League Samoa with a major head –up between Papauta College and St. Mary’s College.

The two teams have faced off before in the All Girls Open Tournament earlier in the year.

Gabrielle Apelu, the In-Country Games Development Coordinator for the National Rugby League stated, “When we had the meeting a couple weeks after the game with the NRL and next door (Rugby League Samoa), they were setting up the program for the big test, and asked if it was possible to have a girls game because they displayed such a good level of skill for a team.”

This is an exciting time, not only for Rugby League Samoa but also for the establishment of women’s rugby league.   Apelu has been assisting with the development of grassroots rugby league in schools and facilitating educational based outcome programs.

Although the NRL assists with training the girls twice a week, one would not expect them to have started getting involved in rugby league because of their high level of performance.

The young athletes will face off on Saturday, October 8th at Apia Park at 11:30 AM.
