Apia Electrical Traders - Apia Maroons once again dominated the second round of the ongoing Bluesky National Women’s Sevens rugby tournament.

Five teams from the first round - Lepea, Warriors, Aana Blues, Aleipata and Apia Maroons - competed against each for a spot in the national Women’s Sevens team.

A tremendous improvement was shown by Aleipata Women’s team who was in fourth place and jumped to second in last week’s round. Pe’a Asiasiga of Aleipata also won the most valuable player.

Apia Maroons Captain, Saelua Seleti Leaula said being a woman and a rugby player at the same time is not easy.

“We won last week and that was due to all our commitment to our daily training. Our club has just started last year and so it was not an easy journey, but we managed to pull through and have achieved our goal so far,” Saelua said.

She added her dream is to be selected for the Samoa women’s national sevens team.

Tournament coordinator, Avii Faalupega, who is also the Development Officer in Samoa Rugby Union said: “The first round served to identify and showcase weaknesses by all teams so they can work on it and progress forward with better improvement.”

“So far, the individual skills of players that are seen on the field is quite impressive, they only need proper training to enhance such skills.”

“But not forgetting their weaknesses and so it all comes down to determination and perseverance in your trainings.”

Avii added it is also evident that there is so much talent displayed by local players and it will benefit Samoa’s teams if those talents are nurtured and developed well.

This week Saturday is the last round of the tournament and 20 lucky players will have the opportunity to represent the national women’s sevens team.
