At the completion of a weeklong training for teachers and volunteers leading up to the implementation of Just Play in Savai’i, the Just play team visited the pilot primary schools in Asau and Savai’i West to provide and distribute equipments for this programme.
The Just Play Programme was established by the Oceania Football Confederation in 2009.
It was implemented specifically to promote physical activity for children between the ages 6 to 12 years and at the same time enable them to enjoy and learn more about football (soccer).
An agreement between the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture (M.E.S.C) and Football Samoa (F.F.S) was signed in May 2010 to enable the two to collaborate in the development of this program. Just Play was subsequently officially launched in June 2010.
As part of the preparation for just play programme in Savai’i, the Just play team this week the distributed equipment packs containing balls, cones, bibs, activity manuals and other resources to assist the pilot schools with implementing the programme.
The team hopes that the equipment will greatly assist not only to children with developing their football skills but they will also be used by teachers and volunteers already trained by F.F.S for the 16 week sessions.
A combined Sports Day (Festival), which will be hosted, for the Asau District schools will be the final event for the Programme. Just Play is sponsored by the Australian government, the New Zealand government, the Australian Football Federation, U.N.I.C.E.F Pacific and the U.E.F.A Foundation.
Participating Schools are Asau Primary School, Auala Primary School, Papa/Sataua Primary School, Vaisala Primary School, Neiafu Primary School, Falelima Primary School, Tufutafoe Primary School, and Falealupo Primary School.
