Family time at Falelatai

The descendants of Lealaitagomoa and Nite Saofaiga celebrated the Festive Season with a family reunion at Si’ufaga Falelatai.

The gathering held over the Christmas break is the first time the family elders have decided to bring together family members from all over the world for a week of fellowship in Samoa.

Lealaitagomoa Daisy Bates travelled from the United States of America to Samoa for the occasion. She is among many family members who have travelled to Samoa for the event. She said the best part about the get-together is the opportunity to catch up with relatives they haven’t seen for a long time and getting to know each other better.

“This reunion has been in the pipeline for so long but we never really got the chance to make it happen,” she said.

“In 2013 when this house was built (faletalimalo) the elders of the family decided then that it is time to make this reunion happen.

“Our reunion started on Friday Christmas Day.” It ended yesterday with a family picnic. Lealaitagomoa Daisy said the family has also decided to hold the reunion every five years.

“We tried our best with the programme because this is our first reunion and we didn’t know what to expect,” she said.

“[But] it all went well and we are very happy to be here. This is a good chance for us to meet our cousins, especially for our children to meet their cousins and everyone in the family.”

Lealaitagomoa and Nite Saofaiga have eight children. Five have passed away.

All up, there are about 300 members of the family.
