The National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) Samoan Fale was the venue of a very special occasion on Friday night. The event was the Vice Chancellor’s Awards night to recognise the hard work and effort by the staff all throughout the year.

This is the third year the Vice Chancellor of N.U.S, Professor Fui Asofou So’o, has hosted the evening. Speaking to the Samoa Observer, Professor Fui said the main idea of the event was to thank his staff for their hard work.

“This is an opportunity for me to thank my staff,” he said. “And reward those for what they have done this year above everybody else. These are the people who will be awarded. “The awards are selected out of the main functions of the universities and the responsibilities. For example we do research, produce knowledge and disseminate knowledge through publication. So the first award is a general award and any staff member is eligible to be a candidate.

“Basically to thank them for all the work they have done. It’s a way of making them feel that they have been recognized by their Vice Chancellor for the work that they do as part of their service to the country and the university.”

He went on to say that there have been a lot of improvements over the years in terms of performance.

“There have been a lot of improvements in terms of performance and how their work is being carried out. There is a lot of keenness in the area of research now and also in terms of publication. Everyone is doing research, but not just research; they are also doing the end-work which is the publication.

“There has also been an improvement in the way our Board members do their work and that is a really good thing for me I guess.”

Finally, he expressed that it has been a great year for the university and it was one of the main reasons to celebrate on Friday night.   “It has been a good year. There were little challenges here and there, but overall there were more goodies than the bad. We’ve had an excellent year, and we are very grateful.  “I am proud and happy and I hope that I share that sentiment with the rest of my staff.”
