Chiefs win first leg of Bluesky National sevens

The Chiefs of Aana secured the top spot of the Bluesky National sevens tournament’s first leg yesterday at Apia Park.

Aana Chiefs defeated top seed favorites Ulalei Vaiala team in a crucial final encounter winning 22-7.

According to the tournament director Salesa Seiuli, he said the tournament aims in producing local talents and identifying young rugby players for the Manu Samoa 7s squad.

“The main aim of this tournament is the initiative pushed by the Samoa Rugby Union in identifying and producing young local talents in selection for our National sevens side.”

“The tournament is also looking at getting the local players an exposure to the level where rugby is at right now compares to the overseas countries.”

The Aana Chiefs defeated Sa’asaai during the first game of the day winning by 7-12 points at fulltime.

They came back and defeated Tepatasi narrowly 14-12 for their second pool match encounter and book them a spot for the playoffs.

The Chiefs continued their momentum during the playoffs and dominated their game against Apia Maroon during the semifinal clash 19 - 7 at fulltime.

BBE Ulalei Vaiala on the other side demolishing Navigators from Safata during the first semifinal clash 22-7 fulltime.

The final clash of tournament saw the fast and physical the Aana Chiefs players were.

Their opening try came from a long wide pass from half back Pupi Ah see to their forward Mikaele Tapili that was unmarked on the outside.

Aana scored their second try from their winger Junior Malielegaoi crushing Vaiala fullback before his touchdown.

BBE Ulalei Vaiala then fought back and earned them a try from their forward Koroseta Veni just inch away from the post.

Their conversion was successful and brought the score 10 points to 7 at half time.

Aana came back to the second spell with another try from their winger Junior Malielegaoi while skipper Elia Tolufale touched down to secure the victory for the tournament.

The Bluesky National sevens will continue on next weekend same place, with more actions to come.
