What are your plans for Independence?

With a three-day break this week we asked people what they would be doing during that time. Here is a sample of ideas:

Fatima Vili, 45, Matautu Lefaga

I have nothing much to do on Independence. The only thing that I was  looking forward to was the fautasi race, and it seems like there’s no fautasi race due to the lack of interest from the local crew. To me, we need to bring this race again.

Muliagatele Losalia, 46, Vailele

I’ll watch the Independence programme from home and cook some food for my family. The fautasi race every year was the only thing that got me out of the house during the celebration of Independence to watch but not this year. The organizing committee needs to look into this again.

Naliki Vitale, 46, Falefa

The only that was on my mind during Independence was to go and watch the fautasi race. Sadly, I heard that the committee was looking at six fautasi to compete but only three were interested. There’s nothing wrong if there’s only three, three is enough. Hope that this is not the end of the road for fautasi racing during the Independence celebrations.

To’oa Vili, 38, Lotofaga

The fautasi race during Independence each year was the most anticipated sport in the country where everyone lined up on seawalls from Vaitele to Mulinu’u or in the heart of Apia. That was the only interesting part of the Independence that I always used to be part of. Now, the government has cancelled it because not there were not enough crews  interested so I think I’ll stay home and sleep.

Georgina Pilimai, 18, Letogo

Our school is taking part in the Independence Day, so after that, I’ll go back home and watch the whole programme on television. I think that’s a great idea.

Kevini Ah Chang, 36, Sataua

Not having a fautasi race this year is really sad. I’ll go and watch some of the entertainment at Tuana’imato on Independence Day.
