Samoa commemorated World Disability Day with a Fun Day at the Tuanaimato Soccer Fields.

Over 200 children from Upolu and Savai’i took part.

They were encouraged to use the power of sport to positively influence community perceptions of persons with disabilities and to promote a more diverse and inclusive society.

The Minister for Women, Community and Social Development, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers-Ah Kau praised the work done by principals and teachers at various disability schools.

“I commend and express my sincere gratitude for all your services for those living with disabilities because it is not an easy task in caring for our children with disabilities every day,” she said.

“I was told that patience is one of the key attributes in looking after the children.

“Commemorating World Disability Day is an initiative by all governments around the world including Samoa since 1992.

“The theme for this year focuses on empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their inclusiveness and equality in society, and encouraging the combined action of multiple stakeholders in order to “leave no one behind.”

The Minister added that the theme coincides with the Samoan Government’s objectives and goals in promoting and recognizing the inclusiveness and equality of every one in society.

“For this year, we have thought of giving the great significance to children attending disability schools.

“And therefore our government has decided by working through our ministry and partners to host a fun day so that the children are able to play and have fun but most importantly celebrate their existence.

“Our government’s aim along with stakeholders is to emphasize the significance of empowering persons with disabilities to have equal opportunities in society.”

She also applauded the work that disability school principals and teachers have done by educating children with disabilities.

“We also thank Nuanua o le Alofa (N.O.L.A.) for their role in creating awareness, ensuring equivalent chances and recognition for persons living with disabilities.

“We also extend our gratefulness to parents and families supporting with love and taking care of our children with disabilities and may God bless you all for these calling.”

The entire week has had members with different disabilities being placed in various work places with the hope that it will create not only awareness but opportunities.
