29 April 2017, 12:00AM

Last night was Week Seven of Samoa’s inaugural Faletalimalo Siva Afi Challenge. Jet Over Hotel Fire Knife Dancers Vaela’a Iloa and Fereti Avia brought their talents to another packed house at Ooh La La Ice Cream bar, home of the Ailao Club.

Having started fire knife dancing at the age of 12, Vaela’a is a seasoned performer with 15 years of experience under his belt. Fereti at 13 years old showed the crowd how skilled and entertaining young performers can be when dedicated to the art.

Vaela’a’s experience got him through on the night, with a faultless, very high scoring performance; he will now go on to represent the Jet Over Hotel for the remainder of the Challenge.

Experienced performer and expert judge Kome Feagaimaalii was joined by special guest judge Ms Donna Stanley, Manager of the Jet Over Hotel.

Ms Stanley said “Another great initiative by Siva Afi with the Faletalimalo Siva Afi competition!” “It was an honour and a privilege to bear witness last night as our local boys showcase their talent” She added “Jet Over Hotel takes great pride in sponsoring one of Samoa’s well known performers, Vaelaa Iloa to represent Jet Over Hotel from Savaii. We are very much looking forward to the grand finale!!”

The Faletalimalo Challenge will have two fire dancers from participating Hotels perform at the Siva Afi weekly show on Tuesdays. The winning fire dancer on that night will then proceed to the next round to compete with a winning fire dancer from another hotel.

The winner would be provided automatic entry to the International Siva Afi Competition 2017, which will be held in Apia 30th August – 2nd September.

Next Tuesday, Return to Paradise Resort will decide which of their Fire Knife Dancers will proceed to the finals of the Faletalimalo Siva Afi Challenge.
