The Samoa Cancer Society visited the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Nu’usuatia last week Sunday.

This outreach was part of the Society’s Vave Campaign funded by the Civil Society Support Programme (C.S.S.P.).

The campaign has been running for the past 12 months, and after focusing on stomach, lung and breast cancer, it is now turning its attention to prostate cancer, one of the main cancers affecting Samoan men.

Over 30 church members attended the outreach session delivered by the Society’s Community Education and Media Officer.

The Society’s Media Officer and Community Education representative, Tiana Silipa Levao said the participants learned about the signs and symptoms, and risk factors of prostate cancer and breast cancer.

“They also learned about what to do when noticing symptoms of cancer.

“There was a high level of interest among participants, especially as several members of the SDA congregation have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer.

“All were eager to know more about cancer and about the work of the Society.”

These community outreach programmes, together with the latest TV and radio advertisement, and Bluesky text messaging, are part of the Society’s work towards raising awareness on prostate cancer and promoting early detection.

Ms. Levao concluded: “Remember the Vave messages: Detect cancer early, quickly see a doctor, and quickly ring us on 23984.”
