Swire Shipping Company has officially launched its operations in Samoa.
The launch took place at Taumeasina Island Resort last week.
Swire Shipping is the brand name for all liner shipping services operated by the China Navigation Company Pte Ltd (CNCo).
Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi congratulated the company.
“The launch of the Swire Shipping Company premises in Samoa is testament to the fact that there is merit in investing in the transport needs of the region,” Tuilaepa said.
“As you are aware, regular and affordable transportation is one of the priority challenges for Pacific small islands developing states including Samoa in our quest for access to markets for our exports.
“Efficient transport services are vital to the support of economic growth and social well being of Pacific island countries.”
“We are all too aware that the generalisation that transport costs for the South west Pacific are excessively high, relative to other regions, is not supported by evidence.
“We do realise that establishing an office in Samoa that is far removed from efficient and highly technologically aided transport sector in Singapore presents certain risks, but we are appreciative of you confidence in the business environment in Samoa.
“I wish you all the success in your operations in Samoa and am happy to declare these new offices premises open for business.”
General Manager of Swire Company at their Head Office in Singapore, Jeremy Sutton, said this is an exciting time for the company.
“Swire Shipping has served Samoa for many years,” he said. “We have a long term strategy to build a professional and independent service platform in the Pacific that is well suited to all of your needs as our key customers.”
“We aware that having an important service is one thing...and the most important thing I guess is to have a great team and so in the case of Samoa we are delighted to celebrate this evening the establishment of our company.”
The local operation employs seven workers.
