Parents are entirely to blame

Dear Editor,

Re: Father worries about the future of youth

Good article with many good points.

I disagree though that the parents aren’t to blame.

I think they are entirely to blame. Children are a product of their environment - they are not born murderers or thieves or rapists.

They are taught boundaries and expectations as they grow up. The parents are responsible to teach these values and to instill the concept of love and respect.

This happens from birth to around the teenage years. Once the child reaches high school / college it is very difficult to change the impact of the formative early years.

You will receive from the children what you put into them.

I see so much contradiction in Samoan society towards children. Most families would say children are a blessing but at the same time I see very little love shown.

They are beaten for wrongdoing, they eat last at meals, and many have a slave’s existence doing feaus or babysitting younger siblings.

Poverty is not an excuse either. Values should exist regardless of wealth.
