The National University of Samoa graduates workshop has ended with messages urging students to hone their soft skills, prepare for rejection and work hard.

Guest speakers at the event included the Public Service Commission’s Kaleni Segi, Chamber of Commerce and Industry C.E.O. Lemauga Hobart Vaai, Samoa Qualification Authority’s Alexander Iakopo and Alex Meafou from the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour.

Mr. Vaai said students should prepare for challenges when entering the workforce.

“The workplace is [a] much more competitive environment now with a growing population and more graduates coming from the NUS and overseas universities.

“Now is the time for students to standout and strengthen their soft skills if you want to grow in their workplaces and grow their individual skill sets,” he said.

There is a need for “soft skills” such as taking initiative to work with employers to improve your role, showing leadership skills, communication skills, being punctual and self-motivated, turning up with a positive attitude every day and having good English oral skills, added Mr. Vaai.

Recent N.U.S. graduates Ms. Iakopo and Mr. Meafou shared their experiences, highlighting the tough reality in the workplaces and the need for students to prepare themselves to accept rejection.
