Water connection a struggle

Life would be more convenient if there was proper water connection.

This is the belief of Arona Faualo, 49, from Lalovi.

Yesterday he shared with the Village Voice team the difficulties his family faces without water connection.

The father of four says his family moved to his extended family’s home because they have a water tank.

“I live with 10 adults in my extended family and five children who are still in school. We eat together in the same kitchen, but we have our own separate houses that we live in,” he said.

He says they have electricity, but the only problem which they continuously face is water connection.

Four people in his family work, but Mr. Faualo works the land to support his family.

“If the sales from my crops are good, I would receive $300 in a day, but if not, then it would be only $80. You would always find me in front of the Princessa Shop, that’s where I would be every Saturday selling my taros,” he added.

Despite how much he receives from selling his crops, it is never enough for him and his family.

He says he only sells his crops once a week because he also feeds his family with whatever he harvests.

“There are so many family commitments; it is something we cannot escape from or even avoid, it is a must to attend to your extended family obligations separately.

On the hand, you have your own little family, the village and the church. Sometimes all these obligations need attention at the same time and pile up, but I am not rich and at the same time the pathway to leadership is service.”

He believes life has become unaffordable for many families in Samoa.
