Selina Siliana’au Oikali of the Solomon Islands has a lot to be happy about.

Graduating as the top student in Animal Husbandry in Agriculture at the University of the South Pacific last week Ms Oikali said it wasn’t an easy journey.

“The programme is three years and so there were so many challenges throughout those three years,” she said.

“One was interacting with other students. It was hard because in the first year I didn’t know any of them.

“I was missing home and my family but I knew I had to do this.

“Then there were the basic things like sometimes there’s no internet due to some small problems but in the end it was through God who helped me get through this.”

Asked how she felt Ms. Oikali said she is very humble and blessed.

“I actually can’t explain how I’m feeling right now,” she said.

“But I guess I’m happy and thrilled to have received this award.

“To tell the truth I didn’t expect to get this because there was a lot of competition and some of them were some friends I made along the way.

“But I guess it’s through studying and hard work that God has blessed me with this.”

She said that agriculture has always been a passion for her.

“It’s because as we all know that Agriculture is the backbone of a country’s economy so my dream is to improve the economy of my country through agriculture,” she said.

“My dream is to continue studying until I can get my PhD but if there are any jobs that come along, then I will work first and then continue studying.”
