The Samoa Rugby Union is working to develop more coaches for Sevens rugby – women and men.

This was the goal of a training hosted by the Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U.) at Tuanaimato last week. Of the ten participants, four were women, which is something the Union is extremely proud of.

Competitions Development Manager for S.R.U., Taala Tui Komiti said it is vital for Samoa to develop more coaches. And having women is a step in the right direction, he said.

The training is the first of many steps they hope will eventually lead to bigger things for the participants – including professional coaching contracts.

“This initiative was raised by S.R.U. in collaboration with World Rugby. There are two levels; if you do not pass level one then you cannot advance to the next level,” Taala said.

Last week’s training dealt with basic knowledge of coaching sevens rugby.

“I applaud the women that have come to participate all for the aim of becoming sevens coaches. Women involved are part of equal opportunities for both women and men in rugby. We also want not only for more female players but also coaches.

“There are two levels for sevens coaching, and level two will be done next year.

He added that the workshop is part of S.R.U.’s plan in developing every aspect of the game.
