Samoa joined the world to celebrate Intellectual Property Day on Thursday. 

The theme this year “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity”, celebrates the brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of women who have and are still contributing to the world of Innovation and Creativity.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour, the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (S.R.O.S.) and the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) hosted the 2nd Secondary School Science Fair to celebrate the World Intellectual Property Day.

The organisers received interest from 15 Secondary Schools from around Samoa for the three categories. Three of the competitors came from Vaiola College, Itu Asau College and Amoa College. 

Newcomers this year included Robert Louis Stevenson, Papauta Girls College, Vaimauga College and Anoamaa College. 

One of the many outcomes of last years’ competition includes the registration of the 1st Innovation Patent in Samoa and the Pacific Region by Jorim-Paul Tagutugutu Philips of Faatuatua College. 

Jorim’s entry won 1st Prize for the Invention Category.

The organisers are exploring the possibility of incorporating other areas such as artistic designs and other sciences and are confident that with the number of sponsoring interests and support they believe that this will be realized in the nearest future.
