A mother’s struggles

Taking care of a family is hard work.

Paying for food, electricity and all the necessities for a family to function.

Leiua Tauea, 55, from the village of Fusi Saolufata takes care of a family of five all on her own. Her family is out of work and they are in desperate need of help.

When the Village Voice caught up with them yesterday, she told us of how she goes to the market every Saturday to sell small amounts of Talo, Luau, and fruits of the land just to make enough to get by.

“You see we struggle because we don’t have enough money,” she told Village Voice.

“We have families overseas that help us, but not all the time.”

The family is struggling in a home that is leaning to one side, due to the support beams falling apart. They are in need of a water container and other basic necessities.

“We have problems with water and our home is breaking apart,” Leiua said.

Her daughter is pregnant as well, meaning more support that Leiua will have to take on.

“I am worried for my family and my daughter because she is pregnant and we need more money to support her child.”

She also struggles making her way to sell her goods at the market because they live inland.

“To be honest, we catch the bus from here to Apia and it costs us so much. I know other Samoans are struggling with the same problem that I have seen since living here.

“The cost of living in Samoa is high, imagine the unemployment, people like us are struggling to survive.”

She concluded: “The cost of living is so expensive, that we can barely breathe.”
