The village of Nu’usuatia welcomed 32 new matai titleholders yesterday during a colourful and elaborate ceremony.

The titles conferred included Alo (13), Lesā (8), Taualeo’o (3) , Amuia (1) and Malaefilifili (7).

New chief, Alo Taulagi Matafeo, said yesterday’s ceremony was a special occasion for everyone involved.

“It’s a privilege for me and all the other members as well to have these titles to our family here in Nu’usuatia,” said Alo Taulagi.

“For us, a matai is not just a leader but it’s about a life of service, serving our family and those around us. It’s not an easy task but with God, everything is possible.”

Another new titleholder, Taualeo’o Fetu Sasalu said he is extremely humbled by the honour bestowed upon him by his family.

“Today is an exciting event and the beginning of a new chapter for the family,” Taualeo’o said. “To our family here at Nu’usuatia thanks for everything and making it all possible.

“We will try our best to serve our family, the village and the church in any way we can.”

The ceremony ended with traditional formalities.
