The Samoa Rugby Union and the Ministry of Health hosted a workshop for Women’s Rugby at Tuana’imato this week.

The workshop aimed to promote opportunities offered by the sport to young girls.

Samoa Rugby Union Women’s Development Officer Avi’i Fa’alupega said there are a lot of opportunities for women in rugby.

“The basic aim of this workshop is to help young girls of Samoa, interested in Rugby, to understand more about the opportunities that rugby can offer them.

“Not only through rugby as a sport, but also in terms of healthy living, especially understanding the basics of nutrition and understanding their leadership role in communities and organizations.

“We also hope to get this young group who attended the workshop to extend the knowledge they acquire from here to their clubs.”

Ms. Fa’alupega said the highlight of the workshop was hosting representatives from local clubs in the rural areas of Samoa.

“We are excited and happy to host representatives from various local women’s club from rural areas of Samoa such as Falealili, Safata, Aleipata Siumu and Aana.”

Ministry of Health representatives and some organizations were part of the one-day workshop.

“The workshop was also fortunate to have UN Resident Coordinator, Lizbeth Cullity, in the workshop to share about women’s leadership role and women’s empowerment in communities and organization.”

The Ministry of Health focused on helping the rugby players understand their nutritious intake in order to maintain their fitness level.

“We were also excited to have representatives from the Oceania Rugby Kylie Bates, Adam Thomas and Tihrani Uluinakauvadra addressing the effective ways, laws and running of the game within the Oceania region.”

Ms. Fa’alupega also added that Oceania Rugby representatives were also present to share on the topic “what makes a good coach”.

“The ‘What makes a good Coach’ topic was definitely one of the exciting topic in the workshop, promoting patience while coaching the girls as well as given Samoa has not yet have a Manu Sina team lately,” Ms Fa’alupega added.
