The hearing of an appeal against conviction by the former Director of the National Prosecution Office, Mauga Precious Chang, in relation to the decision by the Supreme Court to convict her of negligent driving, has been set for 6 December 2017.

The matter was called before District Court Judge Fepulea’i Ameperosa Roma yesterday.

Mauga’s lawyer, Aumua Ming Leung Wai, applied to adjourn all proceedings until the Court of Appeal hears the appeal.

The lawyer who appeared on behalf of Independent prosecutor, hired by the Attorney General’s Office, Satiu Simativa Perese did not object.

Judge Fepulea’i then adjourned proceedings.

Last week Aumua applied for the proceedings of the matter to be stayed.

“I wonder if it’s appropriate that the proceedings of this honourable Court be stayed until the appeal is heard because we also need clarification of the Court of appeal as to what sentencing options are there since the Supreme Court has convicted my client.

“The option for example of this charge by conviction has been taken away from this honourable Court so I wonder if it’s more appropriate that the proceedings before this honourable Court be stayed until our appeal is heard by the Court of Appeal.”
