Think a minute…Yesterday we learned that honesty is the best shortcut to living life at its best. It not only saves time, but it saves all of our other most valuable possessions in life.
Honesty saves our trust in people. When we are not honest, we usually assume other people are not honest too. “It’s hard to believe someone is telling the truth when you would lie if you were in their place.” Our own dishonest heart gives us a darker, distrusting view of other people and life. “What you see is what you get.” But “To the pure, all things are pure”—since they look at people and life from a clean, honest heart.
Honesty also saves us needless pain and suffering. A young mother had cancer, but the doctors told her she would likely live if she immediately started going to the hospital several times a week for medicine and treatments. But she would not admit how seriously sick she was. She said she did not want to take the time from her daily lifestyle to go for medical treatment. Finally it was too late, and the cancer killed her, tragically leaving behind her husband and three young children.
The sooner we face the truth, the sooner we will be free from needless pain and suffering—not just in our bodies, but in our wrong relationships, character, and daily way of living.
Honesty saves your reputation and respect from others. At just 18 years of age, a young man started working at a low level job in his nation’s government. He became known as an honest and hard worker, so through the years he continued to be promoted all the way to the top. He regularly had opportunities to make a lot of money from illegal bribes, but he did not take even one of them.
While this government leader did not retire rich in money, he was extremely wealthy with his priceless reputation as a man of true honor and honesty that very few ever possess.
Only Jesus can change your heart, so you also can become rich in your honest character and reputation. Won’t you ask Him to forgive you for all of your sinful dishonesty—and start following His shortcut to the truth and life at its best by living His way every day? Just think a minute…
