A VILLAGE COUNCIL CAN BE A GREAT HELP: April Asiata.

The behavior of some young people in Samoa today is a real worry.

The view is shared by April Asiata, 28-year-old of Falelauniu.

“When we first moved here three years ago, life was great in this area but with more and more people that’s when it all started,” he said.

“Today the rudeness behavior of some young people is sad.

“There is a growing number of drunks on the road especially at night time and their behavior tells us that we’re not safe here.

“Yes we all know that people are free to do whatever they want to do, but we are Samoans.

“We know our culture very well, we know how to respect others but the behavior of many young people here shows that they belong to another world.”

Theft is a growing problem, he said.

“The growing number of stolen properties from many houses around this area is really sad.

“I think this area is no longer a safe place to live if we can’t do anything about it.”

So who does he blame?

“I blame their parents. If they introduce drugs, alcohol, and violence to their children at their young age, their children will do the same.

“The reason why many of Samoa’s young people now turn to alcohol and drugs is because the parents aren’t doing their jobs.

“Yes, everything starts from family. It’s very simple.”

According to April, Falelauniu should establish a Village Fono.

“This will bring strong cultural values and practices back. The guidelines in the fa’asamoa controls the behavior of youth and everyone in the village.

“This is a good way and the best solution to maintain our culture and heritage in the heart of the young generation of today.”
