Life’s struggles

There’s a hidden truth in Samoa today that most people fail to notice.

People are silently suffering trying to get through the struggles they face in their daily lives.

This is the belief Tavita Kalolo, 45, from the village of Lotofaga-Uta.

Mr. Kalolo was working around his place when the Village Voice team met him yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Kalolo said life in Samoa today was already hard.

“Everything in Samoa is not easy anymore,” the father of four said.

“The cost of living is so high and hard for us, especially when we don’t earn that much money to survive.”

Mr. Kalolo also shared about his family’s source of income.

“My wife is the only person here who has a job and that’s where most of the money comes from because she works at the Saletoga Sands Resort.

“So she goes to work to earn us money while I’m here at home working on our plantation because that’s where our food comes from. We also sell some crops on the roadside when there’s enough.”

Mr. Kalolo said their income combined was still not enough given the cost of living in Samoa today.

“All the prices of goods in most shops are getting expensive and it is really hard because of the amount of money we are surviving on.

“My wife doesn’t earn that much and I don’t earn that much either  and it is really hard for trying to put the kids to school as well as the family obligations.”

Mr. Kalolo said they found it hard to get water because they did not have a proper water supply.

“We don’t have running water here in our place and the only way we manage to get water is when it rains.

“It is really hard because water is something we need for our daily survival but then we don’t have it.

“So when it rains, we collect water and we have to use it wisely.”
