The Samoa Rugby Union (S.R.U) received a major financial boost yesterday.

Courtesy of the Samoa Commercial Bank (S.C.B), the Union accepted a $100,000 donation to help alleviate some financial pressures the S.R.U is facing. The cheque was presented by Fata Samuelu Lolagi and Tauiliili Ruth Thomsen of the Bank to the C.E.O of the S.R.U, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepulea’i.

According to Faleomavaega, the Union has a yearly budget of close to $8 million. Apart from funds being allocated towards developing rugby in Samoa and operations of the Union, a large portion of the funds  are allocated  towards travel expenses for teams competing overseas.

As a result, the S.R.U needs all the help it can get.

Currently, the Manu Samoa team is touring Europe and the Manu Sevens is gearing up for the H.S.B.C World Series.  The team will travel around the world to Dubai, Cape Town, Las Vegas and the like which is a very costly venture.  There is also Brisbane Global Tens tournament.

As part of its fundraising efforts, the Union has been soliciting help from the business community to fund their budget by hosting corporate lunches and asking for help from the local community.

“This generous donation will go towards funding the deficit in our budget over the next financial year. We have been soliciting funds from the business community.”

Tauiliili said the Samoa Commercial Bank was delighted to help.

“We understand that the Union is in need of financial assistance from the business community.  We hope our contribution this morning will assist you in your activities and programmes for the development of rugby in Samoa.”

Faleomavaega expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Bank.

“ I speak on behalf of the Chairman and the board and want to acknowledge our sincere appreciation for Samoa Commercial Bank Managing Director, Lemalu Ray Ah Liki and the bank for this genereous donation to Samoa Rugby Union.”
