The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (M.W.C.S.D) yesterday opened its newly reconstructed community centre in Salelologa, Savai’i.

The majority of the funding for the project was provided by Japan.

In July last year, $266,974 was signed between the former Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Tolofuaivalelei Falemoe Leiataua and Ambassador of Japan to Samoa, Tuimaugaoali’i Kazumasa Shibuta.

The grant is provided under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (G.G.P).

The Salelologa community centre has deteriorated over the years and was initially built with Japanese aid in the early 90s.

“I am pleased that the Ministry again asked Japan to fund its reconstruction because the centre is a testament to the lasting friendship between Samoa and Japan,” said Tuimaugaolai’i.

Japan has been funding such projects since 1991 with the aim to develop and improve the communities of Samoa, which has benefitted numerous organisations and schools in the country with more than 150 projects have been successfully completed under the Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Tuimaugaoalii and the Minister of Women, Community and Social Development, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers cut the ribbon.
