Meet Tovia Moevao of Tuanai and Lano Savai’i.

He is a 22-year-old who dreams of becoming a teacher.

Even though he comes from a family of carpenters, Tovia is choosing a completely different path.

Tovia is the youngest of nine siblings and he is currently studying to be a teacher at National University of Samoa.

“Becoming a teacher is a career that I’ve always wanted,” he tells the Village Voice.

“You know it’s something completely different from my family’s background in carpentry work.

“But I guess I chose to study and pursue this because it’s not just a job that I want but it’s something that I’ve always been passionate about.

“Teaching children with the knowledge and ideas I have learned is something that’s really interesting and challenging at the same time everytime I think about it.”

Tovia said he’s got a long way to go before he can achieve that goal and at the same time, he also try his best in helping out his family as well.

“At the moment, we earn money from our plantation of koko plus my two brothers who are working.

“My father and my brother in law work hard in making that plantation work because that’s our main source of income.

“I also have my other siblings overseas who are also contributing to the development of our family.

He went on “I’m the only one left that’s still trying to finish my education.

“So when I’m not in school, I try to make use of my time to do a little bit of work in the lands; you know in cleaning it up.

“Right now the only thing I have is my hope to succeed in the future in becoming a teacher.”
