PR - The National Employment Policy is considered one of the most important sources to provide labour statistics in terms of employment.

It also provides information about the status of the labour market demand and supply especially the need to provide employment for youths.

It was agreed during the formulation of new Strategies for the Development of Samoa (SDS 2017/2020)that employment targets will be specifically stated as part of the overall national targets for Samoa.

To achieve this, supportive economic and social policies are needed to ensure that youth in particular have adequate level of employment and their rights are respected.

For this reason, the International Labour Organization through the I.L.O National Coordinator in Samoa for Technical Assistant (TA) conducted a three-day training for the Samoan National Employment Policy (S.N.E.P) Task Force and the Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour (M.C.I.L) team.

The training was held at Tanoa Tusitala recently.

The formulation and establishment of S.N.E.P was an initiative by the government of Samoa under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour with its key stakeholders.

Cabinet approved the S.N.E.P document on April 2016  and the official launching was carried out in November 2016. The main objectives are:

3.1 Promote decent and productive employment as a national priority, increase employability of locals  and enable all participants in the labour force to gain productive and full employment.

3.2 Enhance and instil a conducive and enabling environment in the labour force to gain productive and full employment.

3.3 Foster faster economic growth an adequate allocation of investment resources to employment potential sectors such as large scale agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and agro-processing industries including social services sectors.

3.4 Strengthen the matching of labour market demand and supply, through the development of comprehensive labour market information system (L.M.I.S).
