Forging a dream to become a welder

Everyone has a dream. For Ronnie Paul, from the village of Samatau, his dream is to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a welder.

He understands that welding won’t earn him much money but while growing up in a family of welders, the job choice became a dream he plans to pursue with all he has.

But first things first, Ronnie says that he has to finish off school.

“My current plan is to finish school as soon as possible then I can focus on my future as a welder and then I can continue to build my skills with that profession,” he said.

“I understand that there are many welders out there but this type of work is what has helped my family so much because a few of my family members were welders, my father is one of them.”

“That’s why ever since I was young, I have always dreamt of pursuing this profession.”

Ronnie is currently in his final year of college and says he is anxious to get out there and begin building his skills in welding.

“Next year I will be in year 13 at Levaula,” he said.

“Once I finish my final year of school, I want to take other classes which will develop my welding skills and push me closer to my dream.”

“Whenever my father is working, I would go and watch how things are done. Any tips he gives me with regards to welding is treasured in my mind.”

His backup plan is to do well in school so he has more options if he decides to change his mind in the future.

“I understand that there are many jobs I can pursue which will definitely give me more money,” Ronnie said.

“With welding, it may not earn a lot but I still want to be a welder. It’s my dream.”

“But just in case I change my mind in the future, I am going to take my schooling seriously so that it gives me more options to choose from when it comes to work.”

“For now, I will just focus on helping out around the house and learning whatever I can from my parents.”

But right now, it’s a time to relax and enjoy Christmas with the family.

“With Christmas coming tomorrow, I don’t want any gifts and that’s the truth,” he said.

“I just want to do my chores to the best of my ability and help out my family with whatever I can. I also just want to do well in school before I pursue my dream of welding.”

“I am also loving our church’s Christmas programs so if my chores are done well then I can go and enjoy it all.”
