A gift more valuable than cheap plastic toys

Some children are not hard to please during Christmas.

The routine is the same every year; you buy them plastic toys which slams a very big smile on their face, they play with it, the toy starts to break, then it is tossed aside soon after.

For Joe Tine, from the village of Malie, he has his eyes set on a different type of gift, a gift that will be long lasting; all he wants this Christmas is the gift of love from his parents.

Joe’s idea of a Christmas gift may not be cost a thing but its value is far higher.

“For this holiday, I don’t want any gifts or toys,” he told the Village Voice.

“The only gift I want to for my parents to continue to love like they always do. I want to serve them and obey all that they want from me.”

“The blessings I will get out of doing this will be worth more than those toys everyone wants.”

Asked for his Christmas plans, Joe says that all he wants to do this weekend is to stay at home and help out around the house.

“I don’t have any plans this weekend as far as I know,” he said.

“I will just be helping my parents at home like I do every day of this week. Unlike many other kids my age, helping my parents at home is what gives me the most joy.”

“I am on my way with my wheel barrow to wait for my aunty who is on her way from doing the shopping and then I’ll head back home straight after.”

Joe says that the blessing he gets from serving his parents is far more valuable than any plastic toy.

“I am not really sure what programs my church has but for me, there’s no greater Christmas than one spent with all of those that I love,” he said.

“The reason I want to stay at home and help my parents this Christmas is because this is where I will get my blessings from. When I obey and serve my parents, I will be blessed.”

“That is what I learn in Church and I believe it with all my heart.”

And with another year almost behind us, Joe is prepared for another productive year at school.

“I school at Sagaga College and this year was challenging,” he said.

“But I managed to pull through. I am glad that we made it to the end of another year and it’s time again to prepare for a new one.”

“I look forward to another challenging year where I can go back to school.”
