Some people might be critical of the government and some of the changes they have introduced but Polenisia Ma’ulu’ulu begs to differ.

The 47-year-old father from the village of Tanumapua told the Village Voice that the government is doing a great job and they should be praised.  “Life has changed so much compared to how life was fifteen years ago,” said Polenisia.

“The world is moving forward and in order for us to move forward, changes need to be made. And it’s obvious that life in Samoa is not the same anymore. It has improved over the years.”

Polenisia commended on the development of Samoa over the years and praised the government for all their effort in developing our country.

“We have a very good government. We now have better roads, people have access to clean water, we have a lot of projects for the benefit of our people and we have big and tall buildings in town providing job opportunities for our people.

“We are moving forward one step at a time and I congratulate the government for their efforts.

“If you drive to Apia at night time, we have nice roads, street lights, traffic lights and so many things. Things that we did not have fifteen or twenty years ago.

“I like the changes we have now because it’s making life easier for us. For example, we now have ATM machines where we can go and withdraw money anytime. Not like in the past where we have to stand in the long line just to go and withdraw money.  “Nowadays, we can  withdraw money anytime we want. And I like the changes because like I said in the beginning, in order for us to move forward, we need changes.”

Asked about his views on how life is in Samoa for him nowadays, Polenisia said that everything is great in Samoa.

“To me, life is peaceful and Samoa is still beautiful.

“It’s true that some people are struggling, I am not rich as well, I don’t have a lot of money. But I am happy and grateful with what I have and what God has given to us.  “We depend so much on our lands for food and money and I know that you will never starve in Samoa.

“You will only starve and suffer if you don’t work. We are lucky compared to other countries of the world, because we have our own lands and we can get free food from the lands.

“Land is our gift from God and we are so blessed with the lands that we have. Samoa is rich in terms of natural resources.”

He also refuses to believe that there is poverty in Samoa.

“As I mentioned before, we have lands and we can also depend on the sea.  “Our government is also encouraging our people to work the land and make good use of God’s gift for us.

“So it’s up to you if you want to work for your family, or just sit around do nothing and complain.  “We need to rely on our own hands and stop depending on others. Help will not come to you, you need to stand up, and work and then you will get the rewards.”
