Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi is the new Minister of Police.
The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting yesterday, the Samoa Observer was told by informed sources.
The Minister of Police, Sala Fata Pinati, has been left with the Tourism portfolio.
An official confirmation could not be obtained at press time last night but the sources said the decision was made in response to the latest developments within the Ministry of Police.
The reshuffle is the second time Prime Minister Tuilaepa has rearranged his Cabinet in less than a year since the H.R.P.P regained power during March’s General Election.
During his weekly media conference yesterday; Tuilaepa did not discuss the reshuffle.
But he downplayed the divisions within the Police saying there is nothing to be alarmed about.
“They are just playing a game – it’s not over yet,” he said.
“Maybe soon it will probably be done. Remember there is a beginning and an end so don’t you worry them…the men are getting old but I feel it’s over now.”
He also spoke about the ghost letters addressed to him and his Cabinet.
The Prime Minister said he hasn’t seen any.
“The reason why I want to look at it is because I wanted to know who these young ghosts are,” he said.
“It came in this girl’s newspaper (Samoa Observer) but I have been looking for the letter. If it came on the newspaper and I have not seen it then, I feel for the Observer because people can just fool them…I have not received a letter.”
The Prime Minister also reassured the nation about their safety.
Holding out the keys to the armoury, he said: “I take it with me.
“These are the smallest keys I have seen but the lock is big.”
Tuilaepa assured that all the firearms are in the armoury safe and the only weapons that have not been taken in are fire dance knives inside his office.
“I have the keys here but I’ll tell my driver tomorrow to take those in and lock it there,” he said about the fire dance knives inside his office.
“Not because I might get hurt but in case someone might get hurt from it if it falls on them.”
