“Tsunami products to strengthen Samoa’s warning and operation centers"

A tsunami training for the staff of the Samoa National Tsunami Warning Center (N.T.W.C) and the National Emergency Operation Center (N.E.O.C) was held last week.

It was conducted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment through the Meteorology Services and the Disaster Management Office in partnership with the International Tsunami Information Center (I.T.I.C) and the U.N.E.S.C.O Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (I.O.C).

The training covered warning and emergency response operating procedures using the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (P.T.W.C) international products.

It also reviewed the P.T.W.C’s domestic products issued for American Samoa, decision-making tools for tsunami hazard assessment, earthquake and tsunami monitoring, response and exercise planning, and warning decision-making, and tsunami evacuation and community preparedness, including Samoa’s Tsunami Ready Pilot project aimed at building community readiness for a tsunami.

"It is indeed a great opportunity and I must acknowledge Dr. Laura Kong for facilitating this training,” said Mulipola Ausetalia Titimaea, A.C.E.O for the Meteorology Services.

“The likelihood of actors responding to tsunami warnings depends on the quality, clarity and accuracy of the official warning messages they receive from the national warning center."
