There’s always a way for you to work in life.

For Uma Latu of Tanugamanono and Iva; selling taro and banana chips is his way of making a living.

Uma was roaming the roads of Tuana’imato yesterday to sell his chips when the Village Voice spotted him.

The 38-year-old said he’s been doing this with his family for 20 years.

 “I came with sixteen packages of chips, I’ve sold six and now I have ten more to go,” he says to the Village Voice team.

“So if I sell off all those packages, I would probably earn, maybe $240 from it.”

Uma works together in doing this with his other cousins.

“There are a lot of people in my family but there are only four of us that are passionate about doing this job.”

“My other cousin is responsible for making chips and I do the selling and delivering with the other three.”

“We go everywhere to sell it to people and we even deliver to different shops.”

“So at the moment, the other vendor is selling around at the Moto’otua area where the hospital is while the other one is selling at the children’s playground at Sogi.”

“For me, I’m finished selling in this area so I’m going to catch the next bus to Apia; and continue selling on the seawalls.” 

“So probably by evening time, I should be done with this.”

“So when I get money, we half it with our cousin that makes it.”

Uma said this is his purpose in life and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“This is very important to me because this is how I make money.”

“Sure I have problems with this work sometimes but that’s life.”

“If you don’t go through problems, you wouldn’t even know what a problem is.”
