More drugs found in prison

More drugs have been found at Tafa’igata Prison.

This was confirmed by Police Superintendent and Media Spokesperson, Auapa’au Logoitino Filipo.

It happened last week when Police officers were at the prison compound investigating a separate case.

But they were alerted to the “suspicious actions” of an inmate.

When they searched him, Police uncovered eight marijuana joints stored inside a box of cigarette in his possession.

“The inmate has been charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and is scheduled to appear for his criminal mention before the Supreme Court 18, June 2018,” Auapaau said.

“And because the investigation is continuing into this matter, I cannot further comment.

Auapa’au also declined to comment on what investigation the Police were conducting at Tafa’igata Prison.

“That information is classified and unless someone is charged only then I can comment.”

Four months ago, the Police launched an investigation over claims that drugs – mainly marijuana – are being sold inside the Tafa’igata Prison.

The investigation follows a failed plot by prisoners to stage a mass prison break while the nation was preparing for Tropical Cyclone Gita.

The plan was apparently concocted by the senior hierarchy among the prisoner population, the Samoa Observer was told.

As reported earlier, the Police was given a tip off and 90 officers turned up at the prison.

“During the raid, marijuana joints and a stash of cash were discovered,” Auapa’au told the Samoa Observer back in February.

The Samoa Observer understands this is not the first time that drugs have been found at the prison.
