The Minister of Public Enterprises, Lautafi Fio Purcell, is in Fiji this week.

He is leading a delegation from Samoa, which includes the Associate Minister of Public Enterprises, Tuifaasisina Misa Lisati Leleisiuao, at the International Labour Organisation’s (I.L.O.) Ministerial High Level Social Dialogue on Future of Works (FoW) Summit in Suva Fiji.

When the Minister addressed the meeting, he encouraged the close collaboration of the Pacific Work countries to share their experiences and information about what suits country conditions for decent work for all.

He also relayed Samoa’s commitment to achieve its targets under its Decent Work Country Programme 2017-2020. The M.o.U will be signed in Apia on 30th May.

The Minister also acknowledged the continuous assistance of I.L.O. to Samoa.

The High Level Tripartite Dialogue on F.O.W. in the Pacific began with a session review the ongoing changes in the world of work in the Pacific.

This was followed by two sessions focusing on Youth Employment and Climate Change, which are the most critical issues of future of work in the Pacific Island Countries.

To better link the result of the discussions to the global development agenda, as well as the Bali Declaration adopted at the 16th Asia and the Pacific Regional Meeting of the I.L.O. in 2016, the final session will elaborate on the relationship between Decent Work and S.D.Gs.

The forum also referred to “SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway” as the I.L.O in the Pacific has been contributing, in particular, to the first priority area of “Sustainable inclusive and equitable economic growth with decent work for all, and social development”, through its Technical Cooperation Programmes.

Promotion of social dialogue, international labour standards and gender equality are cross-cutting topics in all sessions. There was also a discussion on follow up action of Bali Declaration, which is one of the guiding documents for policy direction in the Pacific as well as the four global themes from the Director General’s 2015 Report on Future of Work Centenary Initiative which are: 1) Work and Society, 2) Decent Jobs for all, 3) the Organisation of work and Production, and 4) the Governance of work.

There are 11 Pacific Island member states of the I.L.O, along with the key stakeholders from the Pacific development community participating. They will propose recommendations on the future of work in the Pacific Island Countries. About 10 Regional Organizations and U.N. Agencies are invited, as well as 10 I.L.O staff from the HQ, ROAP and CO Suva.
