Putting a smile on my children’s face matters

As we prepare for 2016’s Christmas, Lusia Tualima, from the village of Tufulele, says there is no greater joy in the world than to see her children smile when she gives them their Christmas gift.

Aged 30, Lusia was spotted around town buying gifts for her children. She says that since her children are God’s gift to her, she will do her best to make them happy.

She continued on to explain that throughout the year, her children are always working hard at school and with their chores, a small gift to put a smile on their face is the least she can do.

“Right now, I am just getting my Christmas shopping out of the way,” Lusia told the Village Voice.

“Whatever money I have is what I will be using to pay for my children’s gifts. But to tell you the truth, giving gifts gives me so much joy; enough to last me till New Years.

”This is what I do every year and I have really grown accustomed to it. My children don’t cry for the gifts but as a parent, it makes me happy to see them happy.”

And besides, Lusia says that it’s not that hard to please the children and not much money goes into the gifts.

“It’s not really that hard to please the children on Christmas,” she said.

“They will be happy with just a water gun, a little toy for the baby, a ball and maybe a few other small gifts here and there.

“We don’t try to go for very expensive things because they are happy with what they get. The children understand how tough life is to make ends meet.”

Lusia continued on to explain that it doesn’t matter how broke they get, they would still do their best to make their children smile.

“The only hard part of this season is when the children see what they really want,” she said.

“They would just ask and I would feel very sorry for them. So I just purchase it to make them happy. The only thing I really want right now is for the children to feel true joy; nothing else matters but that for me.

“That’s how it is for all the mothers of Samoa. It doesn’t matter if we go broke this weekend, as long as the children get what they want and have a smile on their face that lasts a long time.

“I mean, the children have been going to school and doing chores all year long, giving them a small gift will make them happy and prepare them for another long year.

“They are my gift from God, so gifting them is a joyful way to end this year.”
