CHRISTMAS JOLLY BARBEQUE SERVICE: Fuatino Sami, 30, from the village of Malie

As you drive through Malie, it’s hard to miss a small village barbeque stall by the roadside.

With the savoury smell of turkey tail, great music that gets your stomach ready for a bite and the chefs dressed for the Christmas season, the temptation to stop and order a plate can be a bit too much.

But for Fuatino Sami, standing behind her hot plate, the stall is more than that.

The money she makes from sales will go towards making sure her family has the happiest Christmas ever.

“The reason we are running this little barbeque stall is to make a bit of money for Christmas this weekend,” Fuatino told the Village Voice.

“That’s why I am very thankful to the people who have stopped by to buy a plate or two from us because the money will be put to good use for gifts, food and other Christmas spirited things.

“We sell turkey tail, chicken, ham, sausages and other food items for $10 a plate.”

With only a few minor issues, Fuatino will make sure nothing gets in the way of her giving her family a Christmas to remember.

“The only issue we are currently facing right now is the rain,” she said.

“Another problem would be the busy road because people who want to stop would think twice because they could cause a roadblock on the road.

“But we are still going strong despite those small issues.”

And the profits the small barbeque stall is not too bad as well.

“With this small business, we are able to make $400 a day,” Fuatino said.

“We are only running for just two days and we will definitely have enough for the weekend. When we first started this business, we would only use up one box of turkey tail but now it’s been really busy for us.

“Recently we have been going through three boxes of turkey tail a day so that shows how well business is going this Christmas season.

“I guess people just love eating turkey tail.” And with the day just kicking off this Christmas weekend, Fuatino’s barbeque stall is already almost sold out.

She explains that the money they make during the year puts her children through school and food on the table.

“The day isn’t up and we have almost run out of meat,” Fuatino said. “We have made at least $700 today. We are happy with this little business and the profit we make is quite a big sum.

“During the year, this stall helps put my children through school and to put food on the table.”

Fuatino’s final message to all her customers is a big ‘thank you’ for helping her family make this holiday season a merry one.

“I am just grateful that we have made it to another day,

“I am thankful to all the customers who have helped keep our little barbeque business running here in the village of Malie. “Thank you very much everyone for buying from us and giving us a jolly Christmas this year.”
