SAFETY FIRST: Police Commissioner, Egon Keil.

Close to 650 Police officers will be working throughout the holidays for a safer Samoa.

That’s the assurance from Police Commissioner, Fuiavailiili Egon Keil, a day away from Christmas.

Speaking to the media, the Commissioner urged everyone to take extra care.

“Please, if you’re drinking and driving, don’t do it,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of DUI (driving under the influence) check points out there. There is no tolerance for drunk driving, we will arrest you.”

Fuiava said he understands that there will be many parties and functions but he encourages people to make plans with their safety and that of others in mind.

“So think twice if you’re drinking and driving,” he said.

“Get yourself a designated driver. Utilise our taxis, we’ve got tons of taxis around.”

The Commissioner said the Police’s Festive Season operation started last week.

“Last week, eight people were arrested,” he said.

“There will be more road blocks. We don’t want to arrest anybody but for the safety of our country, we need to do this.” Lastly, Fuiava wishes Samoa a very Merry Christmas.

“Be merry, be happy and have a great time and lets keep Samoa safe.”
