“With God all things are possible.”

The scripture motivated 13-year-old Marie Therese Afamasaga of Leauva’a, who is the school’s top student.

Celebrating sweet success during the school’s prize giving yesterday, she knows this is only a small part of her journey.

“I struggled and sacrificed so much to be where I am right now,” she said.

“School is not easy especially when you have to maintain being in the top 3 from Year 1 to Year 8.

“There were years that I came second but then I fought back the following years to make sure I am on the top.

“I sacrifice all that I wanted to do as a young girl and prioritise my school first over my friends which is really hard because there’s a part of you that wants to go and join your friends and play with them but you can’t because you want to do good in school to make your family and especially your parents happy.”

Marie wants to become a lawyer when she is done studying.

“I want to become like one of my uncles who is a lawyer Tuala Ponifasio,” she said.

“I want to help out my family and work hard. I know it takes time to become a lawyer but that is something I will have to deal with.”

Marie’s grandmother Ruby Afamasaga said she is very proud of her.

“I stay at Vailu’utai but I always pray for my grandchildren and to be able to witness her achievements is a real joy.”

The top student’s father Niulēvāea Aidan Afamasaga is equally excited.

“I am so proud because Marie is the eldest of our four children so she has set a really good example for her younger siblings,” he said.

“This is the beginning of something new and I hope and pray she will continue on this path in the future.”

He acknowledged the support of his family especial the top student’s grandparents Salā Pesamino and Ruby Afamasaga.

“I want to thank all our family members and relatives for supporting my daughter.”

Marie is the eldest daughter of Niulevaea Aidan and Elena Afamasaga, of Leauva’a.
