They’re back. For the third time this year, water experts from Okinawa, Japan are in Samoa to work alongside their Samoa Water Authority (S.W.A) counterparts to improve water supply management.

Their visit is facilitated by the Japanese International Corporation Agency (J.I.C.A).

Masato Gushiken is here under the Capacity Enhancement Project for Samoa Water Authority in cooperation with Okinawa (C.E.P.S.O) project.

His goal is to improve knowledge and procedures about water leak survey together with contributing to reducing non-revenue water rate for the Alaoa water supply scheme.

Hitoshi Nakasone from Okinawa City Waterworks Bureau will be focusing on the analysis of water balance.

He will also aim at calculating non-revenue ratio and measuring minimum night water flow to identify the quality of leakage occurred.

Takuro Ohama, another expert for Asset Management from Naha city, capital of Okinawa, will be working with the Asset Management Unit of Samoa Water Authority to cope with the counterparts in creating accurate map of pipeline network.

The officials will be working with the Samoa Water Authority representatives, sharing their knowledge and skills to build local capacity.

Skills transfer will be achieved through a combination of practical field work, the provision of technical guidance in working with different kinds of pipes, and with the use of standard operation procedures.

A curriculum will also be developed for ongoing training purposes.

The assistance of these water experts will help the Samoa Water Authority meet its commitment to provide safe, good quality water for the people of Samoa so that they may enjoy life.
