A local church is using volleyball as a tool to prepare and develop future leaders.

This is what happened last week at A.O.G. Church at Sa’aga Siumu when they hosted a one-day Volleyball tournament to prepare and promote young talents.

Sasa Peseta a member of the organizing Committee said it was their Church’s Pastor Rev Ulavale Mamea’s idea.

“He saw how Volleyball is being promoted in Samoa, and he wants to contribute to that by introducing another new volleyball tournament together with the Samoa Volleyball Association League tournaments,” Sasa said.

“Our church Pastor Rev Ulavale Mamea believes congregating through sports encourages good sportsmanship among youth members.”

“We now have a Volleyball Gymnasium in Siumu due to his initiative of promoting volleyball centers on youthful groups, and to be able to bring as many team to congregate together and fellowship together within sports.”

The tournament last week consisted of 18 teams for the  men’s division. Five vied for the  women’s title.

E.F.K.S. Siumu ran away with the top prize for the women while the hosts A.O.G. Saaga Siumu won the men’s division after beating Fusi Safata in the final.

“It was indeed a positive tournament, seeing the fellowship of youth members who took part,” said Peseta.

The tournament will take place again around November provided that it will be the last leg for this year.
