The Leulumoega Fou College U-19 women’s rugby team is the crowned champions of the National Schools Women’s 10s Rugby Championships 2018.

Roma girls survived a scare from Palauli Sisifo College girls winning the grand final clash last week Friday at the Pesega Church College grounds, 12-5 at the final whistle.

Both teams were also the Bluesky National Schools women’s 7s finalists in March 2018, where Leulumoega Fou College hammered Palauli Sisifo College 28-0.

The women’s competition kicked off their National Schools Rugby 10s last week Wednesday at the High Performance Unit field at Tuana’imato.

Eight Schools competed for the Women’s Cup this year including Avele College, Palalaua College, Uesiliana College, Aana No.1 College, Nuuausala College and Sagaga College.

According to Samoa Rugby Union Women’s Development Officer, Avii Fa’alupega, she has witnessed so much improvement and a growing interest from the girls in the sport.

She also mentioned the tournament is part of their initiative to revive the sport in the women’s division, especially towards the Manu Sina level of competition.

“The action’s from today (Wednesday) was the reflection of the team’s preparations in the past five to six weeks of school season.

“The reality is on the field. This is where we test their skills, their physical and mental fitness preparations. I have witnessed a huge improvement since the school girls’ tournament has been revived.

“Another interesting part of this development programme is the interests from the girls in the sport as well as being a female official of the sport.”

Leulumoega Fou College Captain, Sarah Telesia, won the female player of the tournament last week.

Ms. Fa’alupega acknowledged the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture in working with the S.R.U. to create a successful event.

She also congratulated all the schools that participated and acknowledged the support from schools Principals, coaches and management, as well as the parents.
