Unity and sharing is the key

Unity and sharing are key principles to keep families together.

So says Silipa Pule from the villages of Vaivase and Vaitele.

He believes that when the whole family works together, whatever the challenges they face, it can easily be overcome.

The 41-year-old man is putting his family first.

Silipa grew up in Vaivase but moving to Vaitele has taught him a lot about being grateful and learning to live with what you have.

“I like it here because I get to do some small business to earn money,” he said.

“I used to work before until I ended up in the hospital and that’s why I decided to sell coffee and noodles to at least earn money to help provide for the family.”

Silipa was at work when the Village Voice team arrived.

“Ten tala a day is enough. We have to be grateful. When I think about how difficult life is these days, finding 20cents is finding a lost diamond in the sea.

“So everything counts.”

Silipa is a family man.

“When everyone plays their role in the family, things will be a lot easier.

“While my siblings are at work I make sure to do the chores around the house and earn some money to support them.

“We all work hard and our family is happy.

“We believe in working together because we know we are doing everything for our family especially our children.”

Silipa said he has been tempted to find a job but he was told that he belonged at home.

“I told them I’m looking for a job but my older brother refuses because he knew really well that I worked before and that is why I spent two weeks at the hospital last month.

“But I want my family to be happy; I want them to know I can provide for them.”
