Grandma’s struggle is real

Iuna Sale is a grandmother with a lot on her mind.

The 59-year-old who lives at Tafaigata and Falelauniu told the Village Voice that every day is a struggle and it keeps her brain working on overdrive.

“But it’s all about looking after my family and making sure we are okay,” she said.

“We have too much problems to handle. I’m not ashamed to tell you but we are in need of help.

“We live because God is with us but life is just too hard to deal with sometimes.”

The costs of tenancy is one of those issues.

“The land we are staying on is under the government’s care, these lands are leased land,” she said.

“It cost us thousands of tala and it will take us forever to pay it.”

Iuna said her priority are her children and grandchildren.

“I try my best to make do with whatever we have but I know in my heart it’s just not enough for my family, especially when it comes to my grandkids’ schools.”

Desperation, she said, knows no end.

“If we get to eat from the Tafaigata rubbish, then so be it.

“Because we don’t know what to do at all. Sometimes if we don’t have enough money then my grandkids do not need to go school.”

She has two children working; one is a security officer and the other is a driver.

“They help provide a source of income for us but it’s just not enough.

“It’s not like working in an office job where they get better money.

“Some days we would have money and other times, there’s nothing. To be honest, we can’t afford everyday living.

“We do need help.”

With many families around Samoa evidently living in these conditions, it makes one wonder how anyone could say that Samoa is one developing country.

If you are able to help or know someone that can help Iuna and her family she can be contacted on 7294581.
