Former Editor is Hungary’s new Ambassador to Samoa

The new Ambassador of Hungary to Samoa, Laszlo Zsolt Szabo, presented his credentials to a Member of the Council of Deputies, Tuimaleali’ifano Va’aletoa Suālauvi II, yesterday.

The presentation took place at the official Head of State’s residence at Vailele.

 “Despite our geographical distance we have maintained a cordial relationship from the year 2011 when Hungary and Samoa established diplomatic relations,” Mr. Szabo said.

 “Hungary is strongly committed to developing cooperation with Samoa, a reliable partner in world affairs.

 “Both countries share common positions at the United Nations and other international organisations on many issues, including global and regional security, peace and sustainable development in the Pacific.

 “I will make every effort to further strengthen the excellent relations that happily exist between our countries.”

Tuimaleali’ifano welcomed the new Ambassador.

 “As members of the United Nations, Samoa and Hungary share common commitment to world peace and security and the promotion of democracy and fundamental human rights,” he said.

 “It is therefore pertinent for our two countries to build on the partnership we have developed over the years through SPC-EU cooperation on issues of mutual importance to our peoples.

 “We are indeed grateful for your Government’s assistance in improving Samoa’s development on the water management sector, renewable energy, medical equipment and other challenges through effective dialogue, collaboration and mutual respect.”  

Mr. Szabo graduated from the Marx Karoly University of Economics in 1987. 

He also holds a PhD in Economics from the Budapest University of Economics in 1991 before attaining a Postgraduate degree in Business Law from Eotvos Lorand University in 1996.

Mr. Szabo first started his career as a news editor from 1987-1993 in various newspaper publishers before becoming the Editor-in-Chief in the Weekly Business Magazine at the Duna Television Rt from 1993-1999.

 He later became the Vice President of the Hungarian Television RT (1999-2001).

In 2001, he began his diplomatic career as a Senior Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary and later became a cultural attaché at the Embassy of Hungary in Canberra in 2001-2002. 

He has held positions in the media as a Consultant for Hir (news) Tv Rt. From 2002-2004, the Chief Finance Officer at the Echo Television Rt. From 2006-2010.
